WASHINGTON, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill, a sweeping package of trillions of dollars of spending and tax breaks, in a major win for Republicans.

The bill passed 218-214, with two Republicans siding with Democrats.

"You get tired of winning yet?" said GOP House Speaker Mike Johnson on Thursday.

"With one big, beautiful bill we are going to make this country stronger, safer and more prosperous than ever before," he said.

The bill's passage marks a major milestone for Republicans and Trump, as the bill contains a laundry list of items meant to push the GOP agenda.

It is slated to go to Trump's desk for signature on Friday.

The bill contains 4.5 trillion U.S. dollars in tax cuts that Trump implemented during his first term, as well as additional tax breaks. Those include no taxes on overtime pay or tips, as well as a 6,000-dollar deduction for older people who earn under 75,000 dollars annually.

The legislation spends roughly 350 billion dollars to help deport millions of people living in the United States illegally, as well as development on the Golden Dome -- a proposed missile defense system.

To help pay for the bill, lawmakers cut 1.2 trillion dollars from Medicaid -- health insurance for low-income individuals -- as well as food stamps.

"We will remind the world why the American experiment still endures today and why its best days are still ahead of us," Johnson said.

Earlier, before the bill passed, Johnson said the GOP would not "waste that historic opportunity" that comes with the control of the House, Senate and White House.

GOP members of commerce are "finally ready to fulfill our promise to the American people" after several months of discussions, Johnson said.

"President Trump is the creator and the champion of the America First agenda. We will deliver upon that today. We've come a long way. We've come a long way. We began this process really about 15 months ago. We had a sense, and we believed that we would have unified government," Johnson said.

Johnson's comments came on the heels of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries' marathon House floor speech, which went on record as the longest ever.

Jeffries was using a technique meant to elongate debate on the bill.

Previous House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy held the last record, in 2021.

Jeffries began the speech at 4:53 a.m. Eastern Time, speaking for hours on the House floor, delivering stories from Americans he said would be impacted by the legislation, as the legislation makes cuts in Medicaid and other programs that assist low-income people.

Jeffries took long pauses in a bid to lengthen the speech, using a tool termed the "magic minute," which permits leaders to speak on the floor as long as they deem necessary.
