JOHANNESBURG, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- South Africa's state-owned Transnet has completed the adjudication process for selecting private train companies to join the country's state-run rail network, according to the country's transport ministry.

"It will contribute to a more efficient, reliable and sustainable rail system that can promote inclusive growth and ensure job retention and job creation," Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said while briefing the media in Pretoria on Friday.

The initial allocations cover 41 routes across six corridors, mainly for the transportation of coal and ore. The new operators are expected to add about 20 million tonnes of freight annually from the financial year 2026-2027.

The announcement followed the cabinet's approval of the National Rail Policy in March 2022, which laid the foundation for third-party participation in the Transnet network while keeping state ownership of rail infrastructure. ■
